Do You have What it takes to Become a Professional Model?

Becoming a professional model is a full-time commitment. Sometimes girls start very young becoming involved in talent contests and taking dancing lessons. But whenever you decide to become a model, do you think you have the necessary attributes to actually be chosen for a modeling assignment. Take our Eleven Point Quiz and see if you qualify.

1. Do you exude confidence? Are you outgoing? Do you feel good about yourself and your body? High self-esteem and confidence are traits of models. They need to be able to walk in front of people gracefully, talk coherently during interviews and generally like to be in front of the camera.

2. Are you tenacious? Are you ambitious? Being chosen as a model is sometimes a numbers game. Most women will never be chosen but rarely does it happen on the first try. You will need to be strong enough and committed enough to search for auditions, go on the auditions and learn about the company looking for models.

3. Can you handle rejection? You will be rejected on many occasions. It is important for you to understand that the company is looking for a particular “feel” and if you do not have it, you will not be chosen. You will need the mental stamina to pick yourself up and get back looking again. Each audition needs to show your best features and traits. You cannot take the attitude that it is okay to let your guard down for one showing because you will only get rejected anyway. This is a defeatist attitude that will make you lose.

4. Can you carry yourself financially until a gig comes along? It takes money to live and more money to be a model. You will need business cards, a portfolio, clothes to wear to the interviews and auditions, shoes, makeup and a trip to the hairstylists to look your best. Waiting to be discovered can be a very long road and money is important.

5. Are you creative? Do you have a flair fashion? Use your creative skills to put together a portfolio that is different than the rest. Ask the photographer to help you create something unique and something that makes you stand out above the crowd.

6. Are you thick-skinned? Taking criticism is going to be part of this job. Being able to handle it without crying and quitting will be difficult. Also, you will need to keep your temper in check.

7. Do you have a unique feature that makes you more marketable than others?

8. Are you willing to take menial jobs in order to get the big break? Do trade shows, local fashion shows and other events in order to get yourself known.

9. Do you have the physical characteristics to be a model? What size dress do you wear? While they are various types of modeling jobs available, many models are still smaller dress sizes and gorgeous. You really need to take stock of your body’s assets and determine whether they qualify as a top model.

10. Are you prepared to do the background work? Everyday classified ads must be read, agencies called and applications sent in response to ads. You need to be very organized, systematic and above all determined.

11. Do you have networking skills? If you know people who know others, use their contacts. Also do not be afraid to talk to locals who may help you get started in a small way.

All of these things come in to play. You’ll need to have them all (or at least almost!) to make it… :)
